World Energy, The Status Quo

Without an energy revolution, world energy consumption is 462 quadrillion (10^15) Btu (82.5 billion barrels of crude oil equivalent) in 2005, increasing 50% to 695 quadrillion Btu (124 billion barrels) in 2030. By source, that’s 33% liquors (mainly crude oil), 24% natural gas, 29% coal, 6% nuclear and 8% renewable, the same distribution as of today. By sector, that’s 10% residential, 5% commercial, 37% industrial, 20% transportation.

Liquor (Crude Oil, mainly)
2005 production 84.3 million barrels per day, or about $8 billion per day @ $100 per barrel. That’s almost $3 trillion per year or 6% of world GDP. In 2030, daily production will be 112.5 million barrels. World oil preserves are 1331.7 billion barrels. Over half is in Middle East (Saudi alone takes 20%), Canada 13%, Venezuela 7%, and Russia 5%.

Natural Gas
2005 production 102 trillion cubic feet (equivalent to 47 million barrels of crude oil per day). Production in 2030 will climb to 158 trillion cubic feet. World nat gas reserves are 6186 trillion cubic feet (1 trillion barrel of crude oil equivalent), 27% of them are in Russia and Iran and Qatar have 15% respectively.

Coal
Consumption was 122.5 quadrillion Btu in 2005 to 202.2 quadrillion Btu in 2030. Reserves worldwide is 930 billion tons (4 trillion barrels equivalent): 28% in the US, 19% in Russia, and 14% in China.

Electricity, the second energy
World net electricity generation nearly doubles in the reference case, from 17.3 trillion kW in 2005 (40% of total energy consumption) to 33.3 trillion kW (42% of total) in 2030. 2005 US generation was 4 trillion kWh. The energy sources are coal 41%, nat gas 20%, nuclear 15%, renewable 18% and liquor 6%. World consumption in 2005 was 15.7 trillion kWh, 2006 US consumption was 3.8 trillion kWh (1/4 of world).
